Bulk Sampling Mold Testing

What is Bulk Sampling in Mold Testing?

One of the most common methods in mold testing is Bulk sampling. In mold testing, a piece of mold contaminated material, for example a carpet, sheetrock, or wood is taken to the laboratory to inspect and determine the genus and species of mold present on the sample. By knowing the genus and species of mold, we can say if the mold is toxic, allergenic, pathogenic, etc.

However, there is a drawback of collecting bulk samples that the evaluation made on it cannot determine if the mold is releasing airborne mold spores or not. If the mold is releasing airborne spores, it can be very harmful for the occupants who are exposed to it. So, it becomes indispensable to collect air samples along with the bulk sample. It will help to make a correlation between the genus and species identified in the bulk sample and the species and genus of mold spores in the air sample.

It is always advised to be very cautious while collecting bulk samples to reduce the spread of toxic mold, dust particles, and toxic mold spores linked with the collection of mold bulk samples. For instance, if you remove the toxic mold contaminated baseboard along a wall surface, it may expose the residents to mold, or mold spores that are present on the baseboard or even maybe inside of the wall.

Bulk sample collection for analysis is usually not required to execute a plan to restore a mold problem. It is mostly done for legal or medical purposes to identify if the mold is pathogenic mold or toxic mold. Usually, bulk sampling is taken along with surface and air samples to provide a comprehensive analysis of mold.
